This year with a new addition to the family. Wilma and Elvis are hand-reared Mediterranean water buffalo, accompanied this year by their young calf, Jimmy Jnr. The Mediterranean water buffalo is an ancient breed, believed to have originated in Asia before becoming established throughout southern Europe, particularly in Italy, where it is best known for producing the rich, high-quality milk used to make traditional Mozzarella di Bufala. The breed is recognised for its distinctive sweeping horns, dark slate-grey to black coat, broad hooves and calm, intelligent temperament. Well suited to grazing wet pasture and marshland, Mediterranean water buffalo are hardy, efficient foragers and play an important role in conservation grazing, helping to maintain diverse habitats. Although powerful animals, they are known for forming strong bonds with their handlers when reared from a young age. Wilma and Elvis have been hand reared and are accustomed to regular human interaction, giving visitors a rare opportunity to see the gentle and inquisitive nature of this remarkable breed up close. Jimmy Jnr, the latest addition to the family, is already displaying the curiosity and confidence characteristic of hand-reared buffalo, making him a delightful ambassador for this unique and increasingly popular breed.
